Shipping Items.....What should I do

I just moved from small town America to an apartment in Springfield, IL. When I used to order products, there was really no problem with having the UPS guy leave the package on the porch if no one was home. Now, I don't know what to do if I'm not there when the UPS man comes by to drop off a package. I don't want someone to steal my packages, but if it's something that's either frozen or alive, I need to get to it the day it first arrives. What should I do?

Work is best if you can arrange it. Make friends with the guys on the loading dock.

A lot depends on your neighbors. If you have a decent building, they might leave it with a neighbor but that would be a problem if they were not home when you got there. I have also lived in some security locked buildings where they would leave it with the apt managers, which is good if they have an office in the bldg.
