Shocking

Has anyone out there been shocked by there tank, Just wondering because everytime I stick my hand into my sump ur main tank I get a minor shock. Nothing too major just a minor tingle, i've tracked it down to my return pump, a Mag-7 that's only about two months old, my outlets are properly grounded, any ideas other than scraping the pump would be appreciated.

Usually, that means there is something wrong with the pump's motor. I would definitely try to return it or get rid of it.

I had that same problem but it was the pump on my skimmer. Get a volt meter and then plug everything in one by one until you find the source. It could be a heater or a powerhead, anything. I replaced the pump and all is well

how did you test with the meter? By putting both leads in the water?

no you put one in the water and then one on a ground(soemthing metal) I used a screw that was in my lighting fixture. You could also use the center screw in an outlet. I think red in the water black to the ground but the directions will tell you. It's normal to have like .5 to 2 volts or so, mine was at 10. I was having lateral line disease problems that what sparked me to test it. It's either from stray voltage or malnutrition and I feed my angel like a pig!!

found the problem, the one cheap pump in the whole system(not the mag). Thank guys

I forgot , i have one of those too. I don't think that will solve the problem though. That's in case a major voltge goes through you tank so you won't get really shocked. That's my understanding but I could be wrong. If you have a pump or heater or something that is leaking current you need to get that fixed. It can affect the fish as in my case. My queen angel looked terrible and he was prob a few weeks away from death. After about four months all of his scales have grown back and is looking great again

glad you found it, that would have sucked if you trashed a 2 month old mag!! did you use the meter? how many volts did you have?

the only time i have been shocked was with a FW tank. my heater cracked, filled with water, and shorted. i went to feed the tank, my hand hit the water and i felt the jolt of a lifetime LOL. i havent used a glass heater since. im glad you found your problem before it became a big problem!!
