Short Tank Sump

I got a 65g tank (36x18). It came with a 15g tank as a sump (24x12x12).

I've got a reef octopus skimmer with a 12" footprint (and it won't fit lengthwise, I tried)
My return pump likes having 6" widthwise.
I run GFO with a colbalt 1200 that can suction cup to the side of the sump, and I have a couple float switches and a heater that also need real estate. I've used Chaeto in the past, but have no obligate pod eaters.

Would you try to
A) cram it all in to the 24" tank (possibly having to do a lengthwise to split the non-skimmer section into 2)
B) forego the refugium section and have a 2 section sump (in the 24" tank)
C) Get a 20 L (or 29) and cut it down to 6" inside the stand? This tank will back up to a closet that I can probably put the ATO reservoir in if need be.

When I had my 60g the only thing that would fit in the stand is a 10g tank which was fine but I wanted to run a fuge as well. I went out and found a guy who made acrylic tanks and had him make me a remote fuge and that worked great.

Or just get the 20l and put the ATO in the closet. That's what I have now on my 90 and do you really need the space in the stand?
