Shots w/ Canon S3 IS

Honestly I think you are progressing nicely. Tank photography is not easy at all. I've taken some good shots of outdoor stuff and pets and horses but my tank photography is mediocre at best. Lots of practice WILL make perfect...or at least much better...eventually.

Check out this simple tutorial, it might be helpful:

Your pictures are much improved. Took these with an S3IS - no tripod as they are top down under the instense heat of my 400W halides. By the time you take a 1000 pictures you should have it figured out :)

Ah well those are the quality photos I hope to accomplish with the S3! Do you have some sort of acrylic box you use to take top down photos to avoid distortion/reflection?

And thanks for the encouragement VoidRaven and 250G!

For the focus issue, check to make sure you are using spot focus instead of an area focus, that will make a difference whether or not the camera chooses what to focus on or you telling the camera what to focus on.

FWIW, I like both shots, the clove polyps more so than the monti.

What is the difference between center weighted and spot? I have both of those options but I honestly don't understand the difference!

I also have Evaluation which I assume is where the camera gets to make a "best guess".
