Well its been a week since i added 10 hermits to my newly set up tank they are the only things in there right now besides one snail. and today i checked the ammonia and it is going down now was at 1.0 for a while and today it is at .50. So i was wondering should i add about 20 more hermits tot he tank now? there is a decent amount of dead stuff because i used dead base rock that was once alive so there is still some things on it. BTW the tank is a 55g tank that has been set upf ro 2-3 weeks

wait a little longer. Your cycle might not be done.

Id say another 5 or so, about 15 snails, and routine maintenance (gravel vac, clean skimmer cup, place filter media, water change, interior glass scrub....)

well my i was told not to run my skimmer because it takes out some of the stuff the bacteria needs i can add snails because there isnt really any algea. nothing is growing on the glass no filter media except a little bag of carbon.

I dunno my uncle that is very smart at saltwater just said that you shouldnt do it while its cycling because the bacteria need what the skimmer is pulling out.

I wouldn't add anything (including hermits) until your ammonia is zero...

And I would definitely run the skimmer. The bacteria mainly live off ammonia and nitrite. The skimmer doesn't skim out either of these. The skimmer just skims out proteins in the water before they break down into ammonia. You will always have enough of these organics (proteins) in the tank that are breaking down into ammonia no matter how much you skim...

I would wait until the ammonia and nitrites first test at zero and then add the addl livestock. The rock may shed some gunk, I would take a turkey baster or PH to them.

I would consider adding some fresh properly cured live rock to add biodiversity. Another source for critters is ipsf.com

Snails are a very good thing. There are many kinds and many of the sponsers ship.

In my 54 g
~10 blue leg hermits
~5 zebra hermits
~ 5 scarlet leg hermits
~2 lg astraea snails
~10 lg cerith snails
~2 lg nessar snails
~10 sm nessar snails
~10 nerite snails
1 skunk cleaner shrimp
2 pepp shrimp
(many small snails that have hatched was from ipsf.com order)
(the ipsf.com order included bristle worms, clams, pod etc.)
(the lalo live rock from drF&S brought several slugs, worms, pods, etc. with it)

& some fish and corals :p
