Should I be having this much trouble getting my 6025's to start?

Just bought 2 Tunze 6025's for my 55g from bulkreefsupply and both of them seem to have issues starting up. The tank isn't up and running yet but I decided to test them out in a bucket. To get either of them to start I need to remove the cover and keep adjusting the propeller until they decide to start spinning... then when I unplug them to place the cover back on they wont start up again. If I unplug the Tunze and plug it back in I have to start the process all over again cause it wont start up. Occurs on both of them. Motor appears to be running but its as if the propellers keep jamming.

First, these pumps cannot be used on any sort of wavemaker, they are designed to just plug in and run, they do not handle frequent start and stop and doing so will cause backwards rotation, noise and failure.

Also, there are two different versions, 115V 60Hz and 230V 50Hz, if you have 50Hz power you cannot run a 60Hz pump and vice versa even with a travel adapter or transformer. If you are outside the US/Canada this could be a cause.

Very cold water or low power can cause this as well. What you describe is very unusual so I really need to know alot more about how they are being used. In general when you plug them in, the pump should chatter a little as it corrects direction and within a few seconds be running the right way.

Just plugging it in and running. No wavemaker, no adapters, nothing. As I said the tank isn't up and running yet so I was just testing them in a bucket of water, room temperature. I'm in the US. Here is the product I purchased http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/tunze-turbelle-nanostream-6025.html Once the pump is running it seems fine, only issue I have is with start-up.

I should note that I'm new to the hobby so my experience with these things is non-existent. Should the propeller be pushed all the way in at start up, does it matter?

OK, I would open the pump (remove the propeller housing), remove the propeller assembly, and rinse the hole the prop assembly sits in as well as the hole in the center of the prop assembly with running water. I would then reassemble it and be sure the propeller housing is on securely and all the tabs that close it on are clicked in (gap should be even all around). I would give them a try again with them mounted in the clamps/magnets. Having your hand or a large obstruction can prevent the anti reverse system from working.

Normally what should happen is the pump will prefer to start backwards, that is the path of least resistance. The prop will then move forward and hit the front cover, inside the cross hatch are stop tabs that stop the prop and it then falls back into the pump spinning the right way. Anything that prevents it from smoothly moving back and forth or an angle or insecure front housing can prevent this from happening. Very cold tap water and voltage below 105V (very rare in the US) can also be a culprit.

If you continue to have trouble a picture of the propeller assembly outside the pump would be the biggest help, it is the only moving part and in general will be the cause of any potential issues. Usually it is running in a case like this, but for some reason it is running backwards so it sucks water in and blows it out the sides.

Did what you suggested, not much changed. Could tell it was running but the prop wasn't moving so I stuck my finger in the housing and gave it a little nudge with my finger and it started right up. Unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started up fine... Guess I shouldn't be too worried...

My logical conclusion would be that the drive unit fits too tight on the shaft for easy back and forth movement for the directional correction to occur. It is not so tight the pump cannot run so likely 1-2 weeks of running will solve the problem. This problem cannot be a major electrical issue, it is something simple and mechanical. I would ask if you would be willing to run the pumps 2 weeks, and then try plugging and unplugging them 10 times, they should correct 10 of 10 times and work the right way. If not, I can send new propellers or a return label and we will sort them out here.

Unfortunately I can't have them running for that length of time right now, I bought them early to take advantage of a Halloween site-wide sale on bulkreefsupply, my tank wont actually be up and running for a bit. Thanks for the help rvitko.

No problem, we will certainly take care of it if it continues to be an issue, just reference this thread. When you do run them the first time though, follow my suggestion here.
