Should I Be Worried

HELLO ALL i am setting up a 90 gallon tank everything is working fine except on the return line the bulk head is giving me a small drip. i dont think it will hurt anything since i am using a 40 breeder as a sump so the drip is falling into the sump. If i put a cup full of sand in the overflow do you think that will clog up the hole or not. Tank is set-up now any ideas........

Did you use silicon on the bulkead? Silicon will sometimes cause a leak around the bulkeads gasket if it is applie directly to the gasket. You can try silicone around the outer edge of the bulkhead.

I'd deal with the problem and not just let it drip. You'll end up with a big salt creep problem. Don't try to clog the hole with sand. Won't work and will make the real repair even worse.

This sounds like a reef-ready tank with built-in overflows and both drain and return line routed throught the bottom pane...true? If so, I'd turn off the return and allow that overflow to drain completely down. Remove the bulkhead and figure out what went wrong.

Was this a new tank or one that been set up before? If the latter, buy new gaskets (or entire bulkhead sets) for all four. The bulkhead gasket is on the flange (non-nut) side of the bulkheads, true? Depending upon the manufacturer, the gasket may have a couple of small concentric ridges on one side...if so that side should be to the glass. Tighten only hand tight or just a hair more by wrench.

Exact same advice that artful dodger gave me a few months back when I encountered the same problem. I am very glad that I spent the time to do it right. My suggestion is to put a sh**load of silicone around the bulkhead on the side that will be inside the tank. Put it on both sides of the gasket and screw that puppy down as tight as you can- BY HAND! don't want to pop the gasket out from under the bulkhead. Let it dry and you should be 100% good to go!

You really should not have to put silicone on that bulkhead. If the bulkhead is functioning properly; ie the flange is not damaged it should form a good seal with just a hand tightening.

Well after furture looking and checking it seems that the leak has stoped not sure how or why but i am going to still continue to look and check on it.
