should i buy the equipment firtst

I would get everything first. Just seeing everything can make it easier to figure out the best way to instal it, or to build the canopy around it.

No you are way off base.. What you want to do is build it first then when you buy stuff to go inside and it doesn't fit the way you thought it would I can buy it off of you for a song! :)

i thought i should buy first but wanted to make sure, i was just going to get a superskimmer and need space for the U tube for canister filter

I am buying anything that can fit in a closet until I get the new tank. That way the wife won't know what is new or transfered from the old tank.

that is a good idea, but my wife all she hears about is the "stuff" we got to buy to get this tank going

Of course this disgusting lack of scruples should come as no suprise, as he is a doctor of jurisprudence.

I agree.

Howard - you cut me to the quick! I did not learn such skills in my legal studies but rather in my former career as a project manager for McDonnell-Aircraft in the Engineering Division. As you can see from looking at Lost Marbles post, this is a common approach for project management work and simply demonstrates good proactive planning skills. :)
