I have a few different wavemaking pumps and devices on various tanks. Vortechs are hard to beat, the only real downside is the price. The controllable Tunze are great, but after you pay for a couple pumps and a controller, you might as well have gone with a Vortech.
Now the cheap way.
I have one tank at home that has two Koralia Mag 5 and an old Natural Wave wavemaker. The nice thing about the Koralia Magnums is they don't make any noise turning on and off(maybe the same with the shaftless Evolution, but I'm not sure). Paired with the Natural Wave, I can get alternating flows ranging for 20sec - 3min. The only negative, the pumps aren't small, think softballs. But for a noiseless, alternating flow of 2500 gph that only costs about $180 all together, it's hard to beat.
