I know a few of you have them...i love the idea and look but alot of threads say they have problems with the wet sides or it falls off. It's a very expensive powerhead....what do you guys think? I can get one used but new for $330 shipped to me.....so i do get a warrenty but still. Also do you guys have the batery back up? Anyone know if a third generagtion is on its way out any time soon.

Jo Fish- hey if you guys get some blue green cromis in tomorrow i can use some more to make sure my tank is cycled. I want a school of them anyways. I'll take 6-8 of them...got any in? I'll call tomorrow too

One year and four months, never fallen off

I have 2, with the battery backup.
I did have trouble with one of the Wireless Wave Drivers, sent it back
came back really fast, covered under warranty, no questions asked, and no problems ever since.
and I love them, once you have them, you will wonder how you ever put up with power heads, cords in the tank, suction cups wearing out, etc. etc. etc.

Oh yea, and I can crank them up until the water looks like a boiling cauldron.
amazing churn
however, at that rate, you get a redistribution of sand

Thanks guys, I think I may wait till next month and get the newest one or get the 2nd generation cause it will be cheaper.

hey guy,

do you find them loud? some people complain that they are loud.. but loud is so relative I wonder how loud they really are? like can you hear them from across the room or are they just louder than the koralias (which are pretty much dead silent.)

I've had an MP40w for about a year and a half. Mine was an original Gen1. It had some issues, and it was fixed and updated to Gen2 incredibly quickly at no cost to me (other than shipping). Since then, I've had ZERO problems with it.

In my opinion, it has the greatest flow with the smallest in tank footprint of any powerhead. Mine creates an awesome mixing of water. It's automatic variation in flow is marvelous.

In my experience, the amount of noise it produces depends on the alignment between the wet and dry sides and speed. Poorly aligned wet / dry on high can be loud. Properly aligned on high, there is a subtle droning but well within the normal ranges for reef pumps and even on the quiet side for pumps that move that much water. When not on high, there is little to no noise.

If they are aligned properly, they are very quiet. What you have to remember is the Motor is outside the tank, so compared to a regular power head they are louder because the water is not around it to absorb the noise.
But, if you put your ear up to the glass on your tank, you will hear how loud those pumps and powerheads are. I used to wonder how my fish were affected by that noise, how they ever got any rest.
Back to the noise, I can only hear them late at night when everything shuts down, and that is very minimal, the fans in my Solar Flare drown out everything when it is on.

Hey guys.....guess what.....I just got two mp40's! They will be here at the end of the week! All the big purchases are done! =))))))

Oh and I heard you can hook up some type of computer battery back up to them instead of buying the one from the factory...anyone know what I am talking about? I need to get one for the power outages this summer. I'm stoked!!! =) This is a kicking system! now if I can just get my water perfect....

The battery back up, is designed to plug into a separate plug in each wave driver. When power is lost to the main supply, the battery backup supplies power, which also throttles the pumps to 50% power to extend the run time of the pump(s) while on battery.
If you plug them into a regular computer UPS, there will be no throttle down, so run time will be controlled by the size of the UPS you purchase.
The new VorTech Battery Backup states "your tank is insulated from power interruptions for up to 36 hours with the MP40w and up to 72 hours with the MP20. "
I have the older pack, made by Icecap, and the run time is listed at 24 hours on one pump, so improvements must have been made.
