shrimp dying

picked up a couple of cleaners about 6 weeks ago, place in my fowlr that already has shrimp, and they died within a few minutes. Had white lines across their back, faded really quick and died.

Picked up 6 shrimp today - placed 3 in fowlr and the same thing. Pulled them out to place in reef system but too late. But the same thing happened with the other 3 in the reef system.

Systems are separate but share the same rodi filter. both systems currently have shrimp. Floated bags, mixed water to acclimate.

At a loss......

I would and always do drip acclimate shrimp...its easy and cheap. It is by far IME the best way to acclimate with. With fish I do 45 minutes. I set my drip to about 1 drip every 1 to 2 seconds. I do fish for 45 min and coral and invertabrates for 1 hour...

You mentioned white lines across their backs, how did you place them in the the tank? Did you just dump them in or place them gently? If they are dumped in too harshly the exoskeleton can be easily damaged, killing them.

not really anything different by way of handling that I've done for years. I scoop them by hand out of the bag and then gently place them in the tank.

Because they died in only a few minutes, I would ask if you have ever treated with copper, or if you have dogs that have recieved recent flea medication?

i have copper in my tank due to my dog getting flea medication and i didnt know about it and it took around 2 months for them to die, not a couple minutes

I still think it was acclimation stress. THe times I have tried to skip an hour of drip acclimation and just float and mix a shrimp.... I get dead shrimp. If you have a refractometer you should compare the salinity the shrimp come in with your tank's. It may give you a clue if that is the issue.

same experience here(already have cleaner shrimps in my tank)

buy 2 more, all dead within a days
buy another 2, all dead within a days
buy another 2 again, all survived, finally and hopefully

the death is not immediate, happen within days
and those shrimps are in the LFS for weeks
understand from LFS that could be those existing shrimp that is attacking them

btw never release your shrimp, place them slowly onto the rock instead

good luck
