Shrimp

Why do people put shrimps in there tank and which ones should you get?

For the same reason you put anything else in. Because you like them. They don't really serve much of a higher purpose than the rest of the livestock.

Under the right conditions and a large enough tank cleaner shrimp will open up a station and is extremely fun to watch, the fish actually line up to get cleaned.

I love my cleaner and fire red shrimp...they even take pellets from the tweezers at feeding time. They're great scavengers too, they don't miss any food laying around.

My Fire Shrimp runs the official cleaning station in the 350.
It is fun to watch the fish line up outside her cave to wait their turn.
Some of the bigger fish have to back out and turn around to get completely cleaned.
Very entertaining.

Likewise. Some fish enjoy being cleaned, others won't allow it.

Marine cleaning interactions in which cleaner fish or shrimps remove parasites from visiting 'client' reef fish are a textbook example of mutualism. However, there is yet no conclusive evidence that cleaning organisms significantly improve the health of their clients with regard to ich, velvet or similar parasites.

Research indicates an association between the presence of cleaner organisms and a reduction in the short term stress response of client fish to capture, transport and one hour confinement in small aquaria, as measured with cortisol levels.

So, in effect it is the fish equivalent of a massage in humans.

Lol

That's actually pretty intriguing and gives a bit of light to the inner workings of a fishes brain.

Seems to suggest that they are more cognoscent (sp?) than we give them credit for.

The skunk cleaner shrimp can have BIG personalities. I have to put a cover over my duncan to feed it because the shrimp will pull food out of it's stomach. I would still rather do that rather then get rid of the shrimp though.

FWIW I woke up one morning to find my Atlantic Blue tang looking like it had been dipped in salt. The two cleaner shrimp I had in the tank kept "massaging" the fish and day by day it got better and better. A week later, BOOM! Dipped in salt again... The shrimp went to work for a second time and as the days progressed all was fine. Go figure...

The two clownfish I had in the tank were spot free through the entire duration btw.
