sick and dying fish, do I have ICH?

The article says it may not be apparent at first as it affects the gills first. I hope you are able to do something to treat them -I'm crossing my fingers for you. Please keep us posted on how you make out.

You've mentioned a lot about the fish, but what do your water phrams look like? You've mentioned cycling going on in the tank, and you said "I did notice he was breathing heavy." (the fish) are you sure you do not have an amonia problem in the tank? Have you tested the water lately?

I just read through the entire article. Lots of treatment options, I'll call John at FAOIS to see what treatment he might recommend, I'm sure he's had his share of customes with Brooklynella.

I have chcked the water daily for the past 3 weeks, and as of Tuesday all levels were pretty normal, amonia is low, nitrites low if any, nitrates I belive on the chart it was 20 or less, so pretty low as well. the breathing heavy, yes the fish

i would just go to johns and have your water tested, and talk to them. its always good to get a second reference, as not all kits test the same. saying that they are low is one thing, knowing the actual numbers to help resolve or to determine the cause is another.jmo.

<b>"amonia is low" </b> How low is low? This can burn their gills at low levels, a sign is heavy breathing and top of tank swimming. I think you mentioned both that's what made me think to ask. Having John test your water is a good suggestion even if you tested it yourself, we often point people to him because he uses high quality test kits and is he one of the most knowledgable professionals in reefing in the TB area. (In case your wondering why everyone always seems to say go see FAOIS- he's proven himself time and time again.) It's worth the drive. I have him re-test my water every 3 mos. or so just to cross check my tests.

I agree on Johns experience, i have talked to him already about this....however it is over an hour long trip for me here in Spring Hill, and not to say a $40 gas trip to get water tested.

They use in their QT Formalin and some other chemical stronger than Malachite Green, so I am actually going to setup a 10gal QT and use "Quick ICH" which both active ingredients are Malachite Green and Formalin, these are the known chemicals used to treat ICH/Brook/Velvet, this is what Robert from FAOIS said is used in their QT tanks, or tanks they treat fish in.

What he did mention is that I should try and obtain water from someoen who has an established "dissease free" tank to setup the QT, he said I should not use new salwater mix as it will be lacking any of the biological components the fish will need, and the water will go through its cycle and this could be more detrmiental to the fish...I thought about using water from my display tank, I figure the chemical will kill any of this bacteria, and even if they lay eggs, when the eggs hatch the chemicals will then kill them and this way 30-45 days later when I put the fish back in the display tank they wont be taking any dissease with them.....any thoughts from anyone on using the water from my display tank? or anyone in or near Spring Hill who could let me get 10 gallons?

thanks,
Jon

I'm in Weeki Wachee.. You're going to probably want to have a filter set up with filter floss that you change daily, too.. To ensure that the water quality stays as close to perfect as it can..

Quick Ich is good stuff.. You'll probably want to do a 2 gallon or so water change daily and then re-apply the medication to the proper concentration..

Shoot me an email and I'll give you my contact number..

Aaron,
Thanks for the water, I finally gt them in, my dumb a$$ however screwed up and when letting them out of the bag into the QT I let the water from the bag which was from the display tank into the QT, wasn't much but it almost defeated my whole purpose of getting clean water....oh well, at least it wasn't much.

Lets hope they kick whatever it is they have.
