Sick BTA

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a Rose BTA at a LFS. It was quite healthy for the past 2 days and when I came back from work today, it was not in good shape. Its mouth was exposed and was not nearly as active as it was before. Attached are some pics. All the water params are well within acceptable limits.

Thanks!

In my opinion your BTA is most likely just expelling waste, my GBTA deflates every few days and opens it's mouth looks similar, and sometimes white stringy stuff comes out. Give it a couple hours, and if it's still like this, then it might be a problem.

That could be normal- my BTA will often take on that stringy tentacle pattern and then re-inflate. But, a BTA can also look like that if malnourished. Are you feeding it enough? My BTA anemone looked terrible until I up'ed the feedings to 2-3x/week (my very reliable LFS owner told me not to over-feed and to feed once every one-two weeks or they can get "toxic' from over-eating and perish--my BTA obviously did not catch this part of the conversation while being bagged!).

Thanks for the responses guys! I fed it yesterday, so I doubt it is malnourished. I hope it was just expelling waste. It looks better now, but the lights are off. I hope it is back to normal in the morning. I will keep you posted!

This is getting weird. The BTA was great yesterday. It looked healthy and was acting normal. I come home from work today, and it looks pretty bad. Here is a picture below.

It's possible that it is just expelling waste. It also could be preparing to clone. Whatever the case, it looks like a basically healthy anemone. Just make sure the water (temp., specific gravity, alk/ca, etc.) is in good shape and keep doing what you have been.

Often times a new anemone will cycle like this as it equalizes the water within itself with the water around it.

After all, anemones are basically a sack full of liquid, so it's gotta take some time to make sure the water parameters are the same on both sides. Keep an eye on it, make sure your water is all in check, but I think it should be okay.
