Sick Clownfish

Hi all,

I've had my clownfish for about 7 years now.

She is on her own in the tank and the tank is all artificial.

For the last month she has been acting a little strange and I have been treating her with an antibacterial remedy (Melafix). This has helped with her physical symptoms but as soon as I stop using it it reappears.

Initially I noticed that she had pop eye in her right eye and had a light slimy looking coating around her front fins. I went to the local aquarium who suggested using Melafix. It cleared up the symptoms so I stopped using it as she seemed normal. However, the pop eye came back but in her left eye this time and the slime coat is now around the middle part if her body. I started to use it again and it was clearing up but it keeps returning once I stop.

She gets quite lethargic when the symptoms flare up and usually stays at the bottom of the tank until feeding time. She then is swimming around the tank looking for food and seems her normal self.

One thing that has me quite concerned is that she jerks around quite a bit. (It's not flashing where she is trying to shake off a parasite - she keeps jerking her head around.) I keep wondering whether there is an internal parasite?

Her breathing is rapid and becomes less rapid with the treatment. Should I continue with the treatment for a longer period of time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

IME Melafix doesn't really do anything. Better to treat with a broad-spectrum antibiotic for popeye. I have treated popeye/cloudy eyes with both kanamycin (SeaChem Kanaplex) as well as Maracyn Plus successfully (either/or, not both concurrently). The head jerking could be an indication of flukes. Prazipro would be the appropriate treatement in that case.
