sigma macro

Hi, I was thinking of getting a sigma 105 macro f2.8 for my canon system. I can get the lens at half the price of the canon 105, does anyone have any experience with this lens? How does it stack up against the canon?

It's a sharp lens, probably as sharp as the Canon. The only real drawback is that it's not internal focusing; i.e. the barrel extends while focusing. In the studio that's not a big issue but when you're up against the front of your aquarium it can be a bit of a pain.

Canon doesn't have a 105mm, Nikon does. Canon has a 100mm! I think the lack of internal focus would be tough for reef photography. Trying to get as close to the glass as you can becomes difficult when your lens keeps getting shorter and longer

I have this lens for about four years and I agree with Doug on the sharpnes thing. However, aside from lack of internal focusing it is also loud and hunts alot. I rarely use it this days because of it.
If you can live with the motor noise and slow focus it is pretty good lens.

I have been using this lens for little bit... 1yr and a few months now.
I've been very happy with it. I always shoot in manual so I can't speak for the autofocus or noise. The one major drawback that I have found with using this lens is that it tends to require quite a lot of light to achieve higher shutter speeds. Other than that, I struggle to find major complaints. It is also a tad bulky.

If you want a decent macro option- this lens wont destroy your budget and it will allow you to produce some solid images. Now if you plan to be shooting a bunch of close up shots, then I would strongly consider investing in Nikon's 105- which is optically superior (in my lowly opinion).

oh and as far as the lack of internal focusing- I mostly agree with Doug on this.. It can occasionally be a pain, but it has yet to actually limit my reef photography.

Assuming that you mean the Canon 100mm, the prices for these two lens at Henry's are essentially the same - $10 different. I'm not sure where you get the Sigma for half price. But, if the prices are the same, the Canon would likely be your best buy.
