Silicone removal and addition

Hello,

I just bought a used sump with silicone everywhere. I spent an hour or so removing all the baffles and silicone from the surface and there isn't any remaining. However, when the tank gets wet, you can still see the areas where the silicone used to be, indicating that there is still some residue remaining. What can I do to remove the rest of it?

Secondly, I will be reinstalling the baffles in my own configuration. Other than masking tape, what other tips would you suggest for making a nice baffle installation?

Thanks

i was told that after you scrape it off with a razor, use a wire wheel and drill to get the rest of the residue and then wipe down with acetone. good luck.

Lowes or Home Depot both sell a silicone dissolver. I have heard acetone to finish it off, but I don't know if it's as good as something specially designed for this application.

A nice sharp razor blade will remove most evidence of silicone. I would also wipe down the last bit with acetone.

I would not use silicone dissolver, but that is just me. I have never tried it but I am sure it works fine, you just need to be extra careful about not getting it on the seals you wish to keep in tact.

I am currently using some silicone dissolver from HDepot. It seems to help a lot.

I dunno about using a CLEAN RAZOR, i didn't want it getting a good cut in my glass, so I used a "USED RAZOR", and no scratches even w/ higher ELBOW RPMs.

Alcohol does not work IMO.

That's a tough situation...

I used a new razor blade and it got all the physical silicone, it's just the silicone "oil" remaining on the glass. I still haven't tried acetone.

seriously. there's this product called 'lift off' from HD. it works, but just careful. have lots of towels and dont let it hit the important joints.. basicallyr rub it on the left over, i.e. smudge, let it sit and scrap. takes a few times. but have lots of water and rags incase.
