Silicone, Which one??

I have a tube of Allglass Silicone sealer but it doesn't seem to be setting up very well, I just got a tube of GE Silicone 1 but see it is not recommended for "aquariums", as I can't get another tube for a week or so which types of silicone can I use inside the tank?

both ge silicone 1 and 2 is highly not recommended for use in building a tank or for applications where possible tank empting conditions exist. i have researched this issue on silicones, and the "GE brand silicone 1 and 2" are not of the same quality and strength. while they work, they are not recommended (just like it says on the tubes) for a reason. the shear strengh is not the same as is the adhesion. the "AGA" brand is of the same quality and is what aquarium manufactures use in sealing there tanks. It is the 'Ethyl Triacetoxysilane as acetic Acid that gives it its adhesion and strength. the GE types (less odor) uses Methoxypolydimethylsiloxane and silicas. these GE caulks do have excellent adhesion but not what aquariums need for long term exposure underwater. and nobody wants a seam leak a few months or a few years down the line

Thanks for all the info
I am just using it to glue acrilic to the overflow walls (to get the teeth), I was more worried about the Anti fungal and bacterial qualities but I don't see any on the GE 1 lable, so I think I will go ahead and use it as it is not a structural part.
Thanks again.

ianward,

thats fine but make sure you use

"windows and doors"

don't use "kitchen and bath" as that one has the anti fungal additives

I have a tube of "general purpose", it has the same picture on it as the windows and doors.
It has the same warnings on it as windows and doors and nothing sinister in the chemical list.
I hope it is ok.

I used GE silocone II windows and doors for the baffles on my sump and since putting the sump on my tank my leather corals have been closed up( its been about 4-5 days). I don't know if it is related to the silicone II though, as I have been having a cyano outbreak as well. Has anyone else had corals resopond negatively to silicone II?

I just talked to the guy who built my tank and he said that gluing acrylic to glass with silicone won't work, after a while the silicone will release from the acrylic??
I kind of find that hard to believe whatever else could you use?

We'll I guess I screwed up, I went to the store a couple days after reading that you could use GE silicone I or II on tanks so I bought some GE II and used it to put baffles in my new DIY refugium we'll I was just reading this post and checked and I used kitchen and bath silicons with anti mold/mildue stuff. I haven't set it up yet. I was waiting till this weekend my question is, is there any way to make this stuff safe like fill the refugium with bleach or run water thru it for a few days not connected to the tank. Or do I need to tear it appart and start over.

ianward,

it will hold just fine and won't fall on its on, if you pull it hard it does come off,

hobby38y,

I really would consider scraping it off and putting new one, don't want to be sorry,

seem that,

use only aquarium safe silicone. should be printed in bold
letters on the package. silicone does not bond to good to
acrylic. use glass to complete your project. dbr
