Simple 5g invert tank

Gotcha. Yeah, every dollar adds up in the end.

You think the Porcelain will host a Mini or Yuma? I was going to throw out the idea of a Pom Pom crab earlier.

I'm planning on doing the exact same thing as you are later this year. I'll be using a 12" cube however and a diy led light setup. Good luck with the tank, I hope the nitrates come down and I look forward to seeing where you are going with this.

My porcelain crab lived in a ric before I got a rock flower anemone. Now he lives there :)

He totally ignores the maxi mini I have and prefers the rock flower nems.

Love the tank :) My 25 gallob cube is full of all kinds of inverts. IMO they make saltwater so interesting.

Very cool so far, keep it up!

Could you get away without the HOB filter, If you had a powerhead instead?

Well, the filter takes out particulates as well as adding water flow. In a large system water flow over LR normally does a good job at keeping water quality high, though normally you also want other means of filtration to keep it polished. But in a small tank, small fluctuations can do big things, so LR as the only source of filtration probably isn't the best idea. Also, as the HOB filter takes out waterborne particles it keeps the water clear. With only a powerhead you'd see detritus build up in places, as a water change can only remove so much. The constant filtration keeps these detritus' from building up too quickly and allows the detritivores to keep up. Plus, you can see Steph has chaeto growing in her HOB, thus adding more filtration. Also, as small aquariums typically require weekly water changes, I doubt you'd want to do any more, when you could just have a little filter hanging on the back. Just my $.02.

I think that weekly water changes in small tanks is a myth, especially if you don't have any fish. I rarely change the water in my picotope I just top off with fresh water.

Either way this thread is not the place to talk about it. I'm not just speaking to you. I'd rather not change the topic of Steph's thread into a debate over pico ethics or whatnot.

Thanks for the sub!!

The Sexies are more than $7 here.. I forget how much. I mean, they aren't terribly expensive.. But, I'm cheap.
Eh, I think I might go with three now. Pair of Pedersons, three Sexies, and a Porcelain crab.

Sounds like a nice assortment! If I wasn't tearing down my pico I was considering doing something similar (5 sexies, bunch of maxi mini's, and a porcelan).

I'm not sure if I will go with a Pom Pom crab.. I want to keep this tank, if anything, understocked. Just a very simple little invert tank.

I think a Porcelain crab would take to Rics, and I hope they take to Maxi Minis. Originally, I was going to use Rics instead of MM's, but I changed my mind.

Thanks, man! :bounce1:

that's a really nice little set up
Thank you. :)

Cool pic. Was the maxi in the tank when the Rics were? Did he choose the rics over the nem?
Thanks. I actually prefer inverts over fish.

Well, looks like you already have an answer ;) I agree with him.

I feed this tank pretty heavily. That's why the params are so high. (I didn't do my water changes, because I couldn't get water when I wanted to.) I'm glad you don't have to do the water changes, but my tank requires them.

Thanks for this.

Cool little tank. Subscribed.
Thanks!

I appreciate it. Stinks you're tearing the tank down. Should you decide to keep it running, definitely put some sexies and MM's in there.

I got the rock nem and maxi mini at the same time so I can't say. I have seen pictures of them hosting maxi minis. I would think they would choose a nem over no nem.

Nitrates are about 50, and ammonia is still a little high. Doing water changes x2 a week. Sick of the high params.
The fish stores all have maxi minis in, but they aren't really...pretty. I'm only going to get a few, so I want them to be pretty. One LFS has a nice orange one, but they won't sell it. :(
Not much of an update.

Another slow update... I'm going to do a water test later. I pulled a lot of macro off the top rock that was dead. It had live pieces growing from the seemingly dead...But I thought it was ugly.

Sorry for being slow with updates... I went through an "out of the hobby" stage..and I'm just now stepping back into my aquarist boots. I've been topping off tanks and tossing food in, but that's about it.
I'm thinking about getting a Peppermint shrimp for the aippies, but I'd hate it if I couldn't get it back out.

Hi Steph! Looks fantastic so far Steph. I'll be starting on a 5g in a couple of weeks. Just have to reseal the tank (a couple of leaks):headwally: then I'll be starting. I love the idea of all inverts, although I have do have an obsession with maroon and gold clowns. I've not seen the Pederson's before. They may be my reason to keep it an invert only tank. Beautiful specimens.. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the sub!
I think you should go with an invert tank, with a small fish or two in there if you want fish. I think Maroon Clowns get too large for a 5g, unfortunately. There's endless possibilities with inverts, though.:reading:

Here is a link to a 5g thread. It's just where people post pictures of their 5.5g, or 5g's. You can use it to help you think of a scape for yours, or get an idea with what you want to do with the tank.

Do post a build on your 5g. I love any tank with special inverts :)

Cool idea for a tank! How is it doing now? I'm thinking of doing something similar, did you get the tank by itself or in a kit?

Thanks for the bump. Unfortunately, I'm having to take the tank down. Nothing extra was added to it. I'm downgrading all of my tanks due to expenses, and this one will/would require too much extra to keep it going. :(

I bought this tank as a kit a while back ago. Came with the hood, heater, filter, and all that fun stuff. Got it at the lfs.

Cool that you're doing soemthing similar, FishNutty. I'll sub you if you make a thread :)

Thanks for following along, guys!

That's too bad. I had a similar situation with a pico I tried to start in addition to my nano; it turned into a money pit, lol. Was it the Hagen Marina kit? I've been looking at it, but haven't found anyone who's used it as a reef.

Nope, I honestly can't remember what kind mine is.. It's one of the ones that have the big, ugly, black hood that has a crappy light in it. It comes with the aquaclear filter and a heater and such.

Noticed a whole lotta little yellow tunicates forming all over the rocks. I'm going to put the rocks into a new 10g AIO (downgrade from a reef) with my mantis and lps.. But, that's a whole other build
