Simulating storms

Hi! So, i am getting an apex controller soon and it seems like it would be possible to simulate storms... I just wonder if this is beneficial in any way.

Here's what I'm thinking:

I currently run two mp40s on reef-crest sync'd. I also have two Tunze 6100s generating a 1" wave on the aquasurf. This is along with my 1,500 return and an additional modded K4 behind the rocks(~3,000gph).

What if, I program the controller so once/twice a week it shuts down the daylights just leaving the dawn/dusk lights to simulate an overcast and 30 mis later ramp up all pumps to full power, or I can even generate a more chaotic wave with the tunzes while the vortecs run full speed. Maybe run this setting for about 3 hours and then gradually go back to normal operation.

I think this would be beneficial to release any detritus build up on the rocks and change things up a bit maybe will stimulate growth???? What do you think?

BTW - this is a 180 gal BB sps dominated tank.

I would say the flow idea is a good thing as far as stirring up all the detritus, I would definitely go for it once a week, twice if needed. As far as the lights go, I don't think you will notice anything from that, but its always worth an experiment.

uh huh ... a cool factor! lol j/k

I dim the lights & crank the Vortecs about twice a month.

Since I have taken up Scuba & have several ocean dives under my belt,
I now know that there is NO powerhead or pump that we can create that
can compare with current that is in the ocean.

Switching up the flow using the vortechs is a good thing, and so easy.

I use reefcrest for the most part but switch to short pulse wave for 30 mins 2x/day. Everything seems to respond quite well to it as it dislodges food, etc which they all happily devour. It is kinda funny though to see my lawnmower blenny rocking back/forth in the wave.
