siphoning

just wanted to hear from you all on the best way to siphon water during your water change.
I guess I'm traditional and still start it with my mouth.
Happy friday

My siphon has about a 4 foot tube, i completely submerge in water put my thumb over the end and take it out and put it into the bucket, water flows on its own.

I have a python no-spill system... costs around $50 new for the longer one, and $30 for a used one on ebay; worth every penny, esp if you have a lot of tanks. With the FW ones, you can both siphon out (works by creating a vaccuum) and add the water directly from the tap with the throw of a switch, but with the SW ones, I just use it for outflow. For refilling, I have the RO water go into a large bin next to the tank with a powerhead and heater inside for mixing. When it's done, I put a tube on the powerhead, and it fills the tank in a few minutes. No lugging buckets at all, plus you will never get a mouthful of nasty water by accident again.

I usually start mine with my mouth, occasionally getting a mouthful. Other than a strong desire to take a swim in the Atlantic afterwards I've had no ill effects. :) Atually the way I do it is to put one end in the tank with the mouth end above the water level draw water into the hose and let the U fill then slowly lower the mouth end so that the water rises, once its at the end and about to come out I cap it with my thumb then I can put that end in the bucket and let it flow. No spill, no salty taste. Rinse the hose afterwards.

I do this:
1. connect flex tube to spare powerhead's output
2. place powerhead(fully submerged) in sump
3. place open end of flex tube in the rubbermaid garbage can
4. turn powerhead on
.. and water flows to garbage can

That is until you get a bad case of oral M. marinum!

Holy crap, thank god that aint my mouth, that thing needs to be put down.

That might be one of the tamest pics from the big book o' STD's we have to carry around for OB/GYN. I'm sure the mods will appreciate me not posting the others out of boredom. :D

Need to keep an eye out while draining from the tank. My Yellow Clown Goby took a ride down the siphon tube into my bucket without me seeing. Filled the bucket and caught some movement in it. He was almost invisible in the orange HD bucket. :) He was no worse for wear
