Size difference for pairing maroons

Thanks to the info I got here last week about pairing Maroons, I decided to pick up a smaller one today. There's not THAT much of a size difference, though. Only 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Is that a big enough size difference or should I take him back and try to get a smaller one?

see what happens. if they fight. take the smaller one back until the larger develops into a female. from what ive experienced try and get the smallest maroon to pair with your older/female because otherwise they will fight and often the smaller will die if it will not submit. The concensus is that if the female is MUCH larger than the male then he will submit almost immediately

The original maroon is probably female, due to it's size and age (about a year). I have the new one in a specimen container hanging inside the tank. Yesterday the original clown couldn't stop trying to attack the fish in the cage. Today she seems to be hanging out next to the container with no aggression. I'm going to give it a few more hours and then maybe release the new fish into population.

I'm getting a large GBTA tomorrow from a friend. I'm not sure that will make a difference.

I released the new clown into the tank since the old clown wasn't even paying much attention to it. The old clown immediately went after the new clown, but after about 5 minutes of nips and nudges, the new, smaller clown started becoming the aggressor and the old clown backed down. Now the old clown is cowering in a corner while the new clown is staking out its new home. I can't net either one at this point so I guess I'll just have to wait it out.

I'm uploading a video of the initial confrontation and will post a link when it's ready.
