Size of mantis shrimp?

How big are they when you get the rock?

Haven't experienced personally but my impression from surfing the forum for along time is 1 to 2 inches on average 2.5 inches being a big one. If I remember correctly the particular type of mantis from the area he seeds his rock at top out in size between 2 and 3 inches so you shouldn't have any real big ones just be diligent trapping any you happen to get with that large of a tank it will probably take some time and you will only get them with live rock not with dry rock........ good luck and we expect pics as soon as you get it the more the better welcome to the tbs family from a hopefully soon to be member :>

I have seen two in the rock I got (48 pounds worth). My one was a little over an inch and the other between 2 and 2.5 inches. I have captured the one that was a little over an inch. The other is still hiding out.

According to Dr. Roy Caldwell the maximum size for N. wennerae is 80mm, or about 3 inches.

The animals I've trapped out of my tank have been between 1 and 2 inches long.

Thanks, I was curious to as of what to expect when my rock arrives today. I am going to put the rock into a tub for a few days while I complete making the 125 gallon sump.

I will move it there once completed until I can go through each piece to find anything unwanted. I don't want to hunt around a 215 looking from bad crabs and shrimp.

Don't put this rock in a 'tub'

will kill it....has to go directly into an established tank......

I will not put it in tub. I will arm myself with ro water to squirt the MS out. Hopefully I will prevail.

Do make sure you look for large, bad crabs (porcelain crabs are fine). They caused far more havoc in my one tank than the mantis shrimp did in the other.

I would also definately spend the time to look for them when you put in the rock, or you may be taking it out later. I have pulled 5 from the rock in my 120 so far. I think I may have gotten them all at this point. Get a good flashlight and look in every hole, and if you don't know what's in there, kill it. There is so much life on these rocks if you accidentally kill something you want, there are 10 more tiny ones ready to take it's place. Trapping does not work when there are hundreds of live barnacles to eat.

Does rock arrive in buckets or boxes?

It comes in boxes. Inside the boxes are styrofoam containers. And inside that are several very thick plastic bags.

the mantis shrimp you will get in richard's rock are almost all n.wennerae or n.oerstedi, neither of which get much bigger than 2 inches. there are some species elsewhere in the world which can get bigger.

Yup

and I caught one, a very big one once on a hook and line fishing for grouper in the Gulf about 20 years ago...was very huge....about 1.5 foot....was a light colored...with black in it.....I let it go as I am sure it was ancient...and did not want to remove it from the gene pool...
