Well it got here this time so thank you DD! I had to pour the bag out into a bucket to find the eel as the water was cloudy and the smell nearly gave me a heart attack until I saw the little guy moving. I got him out of the water asap and into the tank. The little ..... Had regurgitated what looks like silversides or some fishy thing and spiked his shipping water.
So far the eel seems very disorientated ................... I know what ammonia can do to a fish what about an eel? Keeping everything quiet upping oxygen what else? eels are tough so hope it works out without any long term issues either. Will post pics later when eel has had some time to hopefully recover. Any extra advice from eel keepers out there?

no advice since i've never kept an eel but am very fascinated by them.

just curious, is this going straight to the DT or QT? what are the tank mates?

Just about everything goes to q/ tank first but not eels. It's in a 110 with a juvie lion and small m/grouper. Eel is not being bothered although they all checked each other out. Eel's one eye seems odd otherwise it's breathing has slowed down and it has dug a larger hole under a rock. It has come out a few times but not as outgoing as the tessy was, I know diff eel etc. I'm just concerned about how it's gong to be impacted by the shipping water ammonia spike as I have no way of knowing when in it's travels the food got into the water and started to decompose. It was quite freaky opening a bag that cloudy.

He shuold be fine I had a guy send me a banana eel via usps. I sent him the box, (one of DD boxes I had), bags and rubberbands. When I got him the cardboard box wasn't even there, the styrofoam box was in a trash bag. When I opened the box there was no water in the bag. It had all leaked out. The only fluid that was in the bag was eel slime. I thought the eel was dead. It was still breathing very slow short breaths. I got it home and into the tank and he was eating by the end of the day. So the moral of the story I think you really have to try hard to kill an eel, hyposalinity will do the trick though. I learned that one the hard way.

Thanks, I know they are really tough and your story more than proves it. The eel is out and exploring between the rocks with the grouper so actually very funny to see them following each other. The one eye does look different from the other I wil have to try and get a pic otherwise so far so good.

The eel ate some fresh shrimp that I had frozen and then thawed. I was hoping but expecting a hunger strike so very happy. Nothing like a hungry eel gobbling down food to put a :) smile on a new owner's face. Whew that shipping water scared the .... Out of me so really very happy right about now :)

ok some pics. the first is of the shipping water and fish pieces.

the rest are of the eel. i'm trying to get a better picture of the eye to compare as i'm not sure if there is anything going on with it or if it is just the eel's markings see what you all think.

Looking great! Can't wait for mine :)

Got a little powder brown tang to balance off the free shipping as well, had a small blue tang that did badly in our first smaller tank... hopefully this one does better as well. I'm just always nervous with Tangs and ich...
