skilter

I had a Danner Supreme skilter on my octopus tank a while ago. I was unimpressed with the "venturi" mechanism (they claimed, which was really just the impeller sucking up air), I didn't think it was efficient as either a filter or a skimmer, and it made a lot of noise. I wouldn't recommend it, at least not that brand (does anyone else make them?) The impeller got stuck one too many times, and I changed over to a separate HOB filter and HOB skimmer, and that worked for what I was trying to do.
 
I would not recommend a all-in one.
If the dvd player breaks then the whole unit (TV/DVD player combo) needs to be sent in for warranty repair.....and thus no TV...
meaning, if the skimmer doesn't work for you, then you are stuck with a 1/2 *** mech. filter...unless you have $$ to burn, then I would NOT go with this system.....
 
I have one and do not recomend one. It tries to combine the filteration. It is simpler to get a Protein Skimmer by itself. And a basic emperor type. JD

What makes a FOWLR different then a reef, If mech filters are not needed for a reef what makes them so important for a FOWLR, I assume the same filtration methods would work on either, adding corals doesn't help filtration any. I would assume that a good skimmer, and lots of LR would get the job done on a FOWLF or a Reef, please enlighten me. If anything I would think mechnical filters would just create a nitrate problem, which might nit be terrible for FOWLR, but if you can get rid of the filter and keep the nitrates down that would be better. Right?

Skimmers are more inportant on a reef tank because you want/need to remove the dissolved organics before it breaks down into ammonia-nitrites-nitrates. In a FO tank fish can handle higher nitrates and with the eaxtra feeding that a FO requires you want to break down any leftover food as quickly as possible. That being said you'are correct a good skimmer and LR would be excellent for a FO system.

Back to the original question, I had a skilter and it was not woth the money, the first thing I did was eliminate the skimmer part cause the noise drove me nuts the thing sounded like a dying can opener all the time. Now it just sits in box somewhere as a testament to money I should've spent on something else. Like taking my wife out to a nice dinner.
 
I agree with the others; also, in a FO or FOWLR, you tend to have greater bioload and lots of fish waste. Filters like wet-dry are efficient "high load" processers of ammonia and raw fish waste. As has been mentioned, the end product, nitrate, is not as big a deal in these tanks, as it's not really toxic to fish (but not good for most corals). Personally, I like the one-two punch of adding a skimmer to a high load mechanical/biological filter also.
