however you slice it, if nutrients out=nutrients in, then you should be good to go.

One question: does your water seem more viscous(for lack of a better word)

Hi Frick-n-Frags

The water does not seem viscous at all.
cheers

Thanks for the compliments.

I feed not as often as some might think I should. Maybe every two to three days or so. Sometimes everyday, its not to strict of a routine.

I don't do water changes.....another difference between my tank and some others.

I have two mated true percs, one mandarin, and a lawnmower blenny who is oing to another tank this week.

Hi michaeltwana

You don't do water changes? You have never done a water change since you set up your tank? Your tank looks great...I would like to know more about how you keep the water clean and free of extra nutrients...

cheers

I should clarify I have not done a water change for a year or so with this tank.

But my parameters are right on. I have a very active cleaning crew and sand bed is alive with critters.

With the low fish load and low feeding routine its quite easy actually.

I have a 20 high sump with just rock DSB and chaeto.

thats about it really.

nothing fancy, but it looks fancy. And it grows anything I want it to.

SPS, LPS, soft, clams, zoo, gor's--whatever

That's very impressive.....

and now i am setting up a high tech tank...all the bells and whistles..there is definitely more than one way to skin a pig...

i like to experiment.. so my 40 was fun

<<< i am barrowing my buds camera tomarrow will take some pisc of my 58rr skimmerless BB sps reef
-been up and running for eight years
-broke skimmer when i was pulling a "tipsy" cleaning 9 months ago, have yet to get one since, however i did put in two airstones in the sump because i was worried about falling oxygen levels.
-havent fed fish/coral anything! in 2 1/2 years (1 perc, 1 midnight angel, 1 watchman... all fat and happy
i do two 10% w/c 2x a week spaced 3days apart
people say it cant be done but the pictures i will post tomarrow will prove them wrong stay tuned.

cool.

i don't think people say it can't be done. they just feel safer with their methods. i am just skeptical of what mechanical methods are out there. i don't put a lot of weight into companies whose only motive is typically profit and thats it. i am skeptical of salt companies too.

but that being said, as i set up my high tech tank, its fun to see some of these toys work, but whether it will be better than my skimmerless tank, i doubt it.

i would put stock in biological methods anytime over mechanical.

Looking forward to looking at the pics of your tank.

Your tank is absolutely inspiring!! It is encouraging cause I want to do something very similar in terms of your livestock!

I run a 55g with no sump/refugium. I have a canister filter called a Freedom Filter and so far have had perfect water and my tank was started in March of this year (my first tank!).

My light was lacking, but I have the Aquactinics TX5 on the way, so I really hope to be able to add some softies to my setup.

Your tank is perfect IMO.

Dont mind if I print up your list of critters....!!!

Thanks for sharing!

I have heard very positive comments about Aquactinics TX5 so am sure your tank is going to look great with this light fixture. I hope you can post some pics of your set up once you receive the light fixture.

Good luck!

Nice tank. I'm planning to go skimmerless as well... and keep SPS as well.

How big is your tank going to be? You must know that I don't have any SPS in my tank. There are only LPS and Softies in my tank....I'll take some new pics for an update! Everything is still going well and thriving :-)

My bad... I misunderstood about the SPS. It may have been another post on your thread. Anyhow, my tanks's going to be no more than 40 gallons and sumpless. Though, I'm not 100% positive about going sumpless. Post up those update pics when you can.

that is one sweet tank - and a great inspiration

which salt are you going to use, when you switch to tropic marin, their regular seasalt or the pro reef (calcium and magnesium added)?

i am in the process setting up a 50g with a hob-fuge and chaeto in it. it is also going to be skimmerless, unless my water parameters tell me otherwise at some point.

btw, would you think the carbon is necessary? have you tried without for periods?

Hi Krusty 23

The salt i have been using since day one is Instant Ocean. At some point I thought about switching to Tropic Marin because I heard great things about this brand. But at the end I decided to stick with IO since it has been working well for me.

There is a HOB-fuge with cheato in it but the macro algae has not grown at all in a few months. Am not sure why this is happening, perhaps there are not a lot fo extra nutrients in the water and that's why the Macro Algae does not grow.

I think Carbon does help to keep the water clean and no, I have not tried to go without carbon.

Here are some new pics of my set up.

Nice tank!

Nice tank!

Very nice looking tank, I to run a skimmerless tank with a similar maintanance approach and like the simplicity of it. I saw in your early posts in this thread that you keep red sea stars (Fromia sp.?) in your tank and there were one in the new pictures. Is it the same sea star and do they appear healthy and thriving as it looks in the picture?
