Can anyone please tell me what a "Skimmate is, what it does, as I have not seen or heard of it before!

I am not sure if this is what you are talking about but my understanding of skimmate is its not a piece of equipment. Skimmate is the stuff that your protein skimmer pulls out

skimmate is what is produced by your protein skimmer. It's the waste that is produced.

here is some skimmate that my skimmer pulled out:

skimmate is organics that are floating around in your water column. a skimmer pulls it out before it has the chance to break down and create nitrates and phosphates. and what you are left with in the skimmer cup is what is in the photo above.
