skimmer cup cleaning

I built a tank for a freind with the filter system in a closet in the bathroom. I put a "T" fitting in the toilet filler vavle and connenected it to the skimmer cup and the skimmer outflow cup directly to the toilet drain so every time the toilet was flushed it aslo "flushed the skimmer cup. So cleaning the skimmer cup was automatic and only required attention every year or so.

I clean mine 2X a week. I dump in kitchen sink. I use toothbrush and paper towels. Afterwards I clean the sink with vinegar, no smells and I am very picky about smells and my clean kitchen. I am begining to like the smell of vinegar, it is lovley compared to skimmate.

That is very cool. How did you clean the neck of the skimmer?

I clean my collection cup & remote collection container out every 5 days or so. I'll clean the cup, and wipe the neck out well. The remote collection container just gets a quick rinse. I'm usually producing skimate within an hour after cleaning.

What kind of skimmer are you running Whiirly?

well he cleaned the skimmer neck like normal but not very often since the skimate made it to the cup to be flushed away regularly. Thats the nice thing about an ETSS downdraft skimmer. And with a yearly TOTAL skimmer clean in the spring worked out very well. All the "flushing" lines were on easy connectors like the ones on an R/O unit So pulling the skimmer offline temporarly wasn't difficult.

I "empty" the (5 gallon?) cup on my monster via a drain line once a week. Once every two weeks the cup comes off and gets cleaned. Since its a cone there is no neck to clean. The skimmer starts producing skimmate within 60 seconds after startup no mater what I do to it. In fact it cylcles on and off 5 times a day during feedings.
