Skimmer + filter socks vs skimmer only

Hi guys,

I just want to confirm this if this is normal.. Last few weeks my tank is running with skimmer only and notice that it skim very well as I can see green stuff in my DIY skimmer BUT now I put a filter sock to me overflow that is located before my skimmer and notice that there is no green stuff on my skimmer just bubbles only(given that I clean my skimmer first before I put filter sock). The filter sock is 2 days old.. Hope someone can confirm this.. Thank you.

Far better, IME, to have the skimmer remove as much as possible. Unless you are really diligent about changing the filter socks, detritus is not removed, just 'tea bagging'.

I would keep the socks handy, for special issues, but not use them normally. Having the ability to add a sock to filter a sandstorm you caused or something is always handy.

I just removed my filter socks and let the live rock, skimmer, bio balls and ceramic rings do the job.

My filter socks are easy to remove. Takes about 2 min for both tanks, they keep the water crystal clear and prevent crap from clogging the skimmer impeller which is far harder to clean than changing filter socks. Just be sure and change the socks frequently.

Yes I agree. In my end I would definitely use filter socks when cleaning my sand
