Skimmer for a 120

NC Reef Guy

New member
I am getting ready to upgrade to a 120 from my current 55. The guy at the local fish store recommends the ASM G-2. I do not know to much about it though, I have a feeling there are better ones out there. I looking to stay under $300 on the skimmer if possible. Any comments on the ASM or suggestions of other better ones?

Thanks.

I'd say your LFS guy gave you a solid recommendation -- good skimmer for the money and well suited to anything you'd do in a 120.

There are far better skimmers than the ASM, especially in build quality. They have flexible cheap bodies, and are overpriced. They were good several years ago as a knock off of the EuroReef.

Here are a few skimmers I would consider with your price area:
Octopus skimmers

Octopus Extreme

The MSX 160 or 200-

I have a 120 and just went through the same decision. I ended up getting a bubble magus 160, basically it's a recirculating skimmer which is a clone of the deltec apf 600 or H&S A150. It comes with an aquabee 2000/1 pump. They make both recirculating and non recirculating models. The non recirculating models are clones of bubble king mini skimmers. You can look at them at nuocean.com So far I am very happy. There is also bubble magus owners thread here.
