Skimmer for Biocube 32

I am looking at a skimmer for my Biocube 32 and was wondering if anyone has a non coralife skimmer in a Biocube 32. I know the popular choice with Biocube 29 owners is the Aquaticlife 115. I am a bit concerned with the height of that unit since the hood clearance in the back on the Biocube 32 seems to be lower than the previous model. Notice the two pics below. The 32 hood slopes down in the back compared to the 29.

I have the Biocube in the top picture and I was never able to get the Aquaticlife 115 to fit.

The Coralife skimmer sucks for multiple reasons, the least of which is that you have to replace the airstone.

I also tried the Tunze 9001 in chamber 2 but it's way too sensitive to changes in water level (even with a ATO) and I could never get it to pull proper skim.

Eventually I took a Dremmel to my hood and cut out the back middle section, removed the back pop-up door, and started using a HOB-1. best decision I've made.

I just got a Hydor SlimSkim Nano today. I'm planning to try and see how it fits tomorrow (my Biocube 32 is at work). It looks great so far, but I'm curious about the fit. People like it for the Biocube 29, but it does require some mods to fit that tank. I'm hoping that i will fit the 32 better. I'll try to put it in chamber 1 (right side when you are looking from the front).

The only mod I made to it was flipping the suction cup panel to the inside, for my biocube 29. Works well.

Let me know how it works out.

Thanks,

So it certainly doesn't fit stock. I tried to flip the suction cup panel, and then it does fit although it is loose and moves around easily. I'm sure I could figure out a way to hold it in place, but the bigger problem is that it seems to restrict water flow quite a bit through chamber 1. I no longer have a nice waterfall going into chamber 2. Because of this, I think I'll go with putting the skimmer into chamber 2 where it fits easily if you remove the stock media basket. I'll probably wait for the new InTank media basket for the 32 and put them both in chamber 2. The new stock 3-level media tray that comes with the 32 goes nearly the full width of chamber 2. This weekend I may also look into trimming that down enough to allow me to put the skimmer in there too.

When I figure out, I'll post my setup.

Sorry for the slow response. Ours fits tight, but the tank is an old model. Yea tell me how you figure it out.

can anyone post pictures of the skimmer in the 32?
I hope to find one that fits without mods
thank you

I'm fairly certain that the Hydor Slim Skim that I bought will fit in chamber 2 after I swap the stock media tray for the inTank media basket. I'm just waiting for them to come out with the basket. I tried to put it in the display tank temporarily, but it was too tall to be able to close the lid without mods. But I think with the lower water level in chamber 2 it should be no problem. I pulled out the stock basket just to see if it would fit, and it does easily if you put the magnets on the wall between chambers 2 and 3. So I'm just waiting for inTank. . .

I'm just starting up a 32 LED myself and decided to go skimmerless after reading multiple threads about whether a skimmer is "necessary" if regular water changes are possible... (that's what I plan for now).

Just got this for my 32...couldn't get it to fit with the hood. I think the new sloped hood is too low in the back. I can't shut it and keep the airline above water.

I think a killer skimmer in chamber 2 of the new BC32 would be the Aquamaxx WS-1 as it's not a nano skimmer but a real skimmer. I tried to figure out how to fit one in my BC29 by cutting a small round hole out of my InTank media basket to fit the skimmer's inlet pipe. Unfortunately the skimmer was a hair too tall for the BC29 rear hood to close property. The BC32 is a few inches taller than the BC29, so even without the rear access lid, I think it would fit like a glove. The only inconvenience would be that when you remove the media basket for maintenance, you'd have to take out the skimmer as well... Well worth it IMHO to have a real skimmer back there.

Thought I'd give a quick update on the skimmer situation with my Biocube 32. I decided to go with the Tunze 9001 in the middle chamber. Fits nicely with the intank media basket. The skimmer is remarkably quiet.

I recently purchased the biocube 32 and am looking at either the aquaticlife 115 in chamber 1 or the tunze 9001.
My preferred choice would be the aquaticlife in chamber 1 has anyone successfully been able to do this without modifying the tank?

I can confirm the tunez will not work in chamber 1. A115 is my next test but have not had the $$$ laying around. If you get the 115, let me know
