Skimmer going crazy!

I am cycling a new tank. The tank is a 170G with a 50G sump, 50# LR. The skimmer is a turbofloater shorty. When I run any water through the skimmer it overflows into the collection cup. It worked great for thwe first day. On the second day it started doing this. Is this normal? Do I just need to leave the skimmer off for a while until the tank cycles a bit?

Im not sure about the brand of skimmer you have. but it sounds like you need to adjust the bubble height in the neck down lower.
is the live rock cured ? if not you need that skimmer to run

skimmers have a break in period before they start working well. My guess is that now it's broken in it needs to be adjusted. Did you add anything to the tank? Epoxy? chemicals? Some can cause it to go bonkers.

The skimmer is an Aqua Medic Turbofloater 5000 Shorty. I have the return plumbed through the skimmer with a bypass valve. I can shut the water off that goes through the skimmer and it still bubbles over with just the water that is in the skimmer.
