I'm new to this, I'm debating on a 75 g or a 90g tank. What do you guys suggest for a skimmer, considering this is my new hobby I don't want the cheapest thing out there.. Thanks for the help

You can't go far wrong with a reef octopus XP cone skimmer, imho they're great skimmers :)

Hang on or in sump? In sump it will depend on how much space you have in your skimmer area of the sump / room above sump.

Sump.... Not sure on space, haven't purchased the tank yet. So I'm open to anything just trying to get some ideas of the better skimmers

Super Reef Octopus are great skimmers for great price...you may not need cone. And definately do sump. Easier to maintain, clean, and works better.

+1

In-sump skimmers are also out of sight, which is a huge plus for me. I never had a HOB skimmer but I personally would not want something hanging in open sight on my display tank. On another positive note, when you go on vacations or trips you can connect your in-sump skimmer cup to an external bucket and not worry about the skimmer overflowing back into the tank. I'm not sure if HOB skimmers have that ability.

Plenty of quality skimmers to go with. Your main concern on the skimmer is how big of a sump are you going to have. You are going to want to put into consideration that you will also have heaters, the return pump, maybe a fuge if you go that direction and other various pieces of equipment. The larger the better. But your stand will dictate how big your sump can be and thats why I always recommend building your own stand or getting someone to build it.

Skimmer choices: Reef Octopus, Vertex, Bubble Magnus and many many more.

Thanks for the help guys... I've been reading all of the stickies.. Great site and also the same exact set up as my old hobby's site softball fans

I wouldn't skimp on the skimmer.....I have the reef octopus Nws 150 for my 90 gallon...i think it handles up to a 150 gallon tank

How much does this reef octo run and a good place to buy?

Pretty much the same everywhere. $295 and most places offer free shipping. Bulk reef supply, coralvue, etc. Most of the big vendors have them.

@Sponger0 - worth every penny
