Pretty simple. If i have a fairly heavy planted macro and grass tank, with a dsb, some rock, a few softy corals and light fish load, does it need a skimmer or would a skimmer be detrimental?
I run a 28 gal tank with macros and do not use a skimmer. It has corals, invertebrates and two fish. So it is a relatively light biological load. IMO a skimmer is optional in a lightly loaded system.

Unnecessary and perhaps detrimental. I had a cyano issue with a skimmer in my heavily planted reef. Removed the skimmer, cyano is gone and plant growth is even better. It probably doesn't really hurt most planted tanks, but I definitely believe that it's unnecessary.
I'm skimmerless as well. There's so much plant growth that as soon as there is any free nitrogen (which skimmers prevent), it gets uptaken by the algae and plants.
