Skimmer is a go!

The mesh mod will do wonders for the amount of air the skimmer draws in and is EASY to do yourself. I have plenty of small cable ties and gutter guard if anyone's interested.

The volute mods were done for a different pump, but the concept is the same for all. It basically involves enlarging the pump output as much as possible so there are no restrictions and radiusing the corners with a dremel and sanding smooth on the inside of the volute where the water leaves the pump.

Most of the venturis are quite restrictive in the amount of air they let in. Depending on how they're built, they may be capable of having the holes enlarged to allow more air intake. Some even use rigid airline tubing, fittings, etc. to locate the air intake portion of the venturi as close as possible to the pump impeller for even better air draw. On the pump I have (basically an Ocean Runner), I was able to go from about 8 SCFM to somewhere around 12-13 SCFM of air intake. This translates into more bubbles, a higher bubble column, and more efficient skimming.

Now, some words of warning. You must be careful doing these mods, or you could permanently damage parts of the pump and would require replacement parts or a replacement pump. Depending on your pump, it could be a $100 mistake, so they're not for the "faint of heart".

NO kidding.

I will have to just check it out and see how it does like this for a bit. As these guys grow (and the bioload increases) and the pump wears out a little bit, maybe then I will do those mods.

Meshing the venturi doesn't sound too awfully bad though.

The gate valve mod seems ok too, but that recirc mod!!

I've been contemplating meshing the impeller on my Sedra500/G3. Dave, have any pictures of what you did? I've read though that other thread and think I had it all down pat, but if anyone else has any more info, it would certainly be helpful. Did you just use a few pieces of gutter guard all zip-tied together? I have both lying around at home...

Mel, if I do this anytime soon, I'll take some pictures along the way.

It may be worthwhile to invest in an airflow meter as well to see if what you modded actually does make a difference...

Hmmm, now that sounds like a good use of club funds... lol ;)

A Dwyer meter is cheap, like $18. I did not take pictures, but plenty of people have if you search for it. Just 3-5 discs of gutter guard cut in a circle attached to the needlewheel blades with small cable ties. You'll probably need to remove some of the needlewheel blades to fit the gutter guard depending on how many "layers" there are on your impeller. To really make it work as well as it can, I feel it is equally important to enlarge the venturi or, better yet, install a more efficient venturi.

That is a good idea. I was thinking we'd just get together and rig them, but a meeting would be a much better place to discuss it.

Want to meet at my house so I can show you guys my new canopy and skimmer? We don't have to if someone else has volunteered, but I am sure everyone wouldn't mind seeing it again now that it has the actual canopy up there.

Sounds good to me Mel... :) The meeting will have to be at your house, because we'd be rotting before we actually got to see some pics of your tank and scooter... You learn to ride that thing yet???

Really skimmers are a great topic... As well as discussing different mods and why they're beneficial, we can discuss different types of skimmers, how they work, and the pros and cons of each... Though I'm not too familiar with Down draft and Beckett skimmers, I know a few in the club can help us out there!!!!!

Yeah yeah...it's not like you all don't know where I live if you want to stop by and see both of them at any point!

hah hah.

No I haven't learned to ride it yet. I have not insured it and since it's so nice and new, Brent doesn't think I should ride it before I get it insured. He actually somewhat refuses to teach me to ride it til after I get both a helmet and insurance. I did register it though!

We can modify my skimmer with this meshed venturi thing to show how to do it. If everyone thinks that will be interesting to them.

I definately want to do it to my g3... Since that tank is heavily stocked... So I'll probalby bring that one... I'll see how it does before I do the g4, besides which, I have other plans for that one... lol ;)

Oh, and a helmet is a very important thing... I think you should get a pink one to match your scooter... :D

Just pulling this thread back up as an FYI. I've got the mesh material coming in the next week or so, so I will be modding my Sedra5000 soon.

You can do this with an octopus as well..I am intersted in meeting yall and doing this to our skimmers if we can....
I was a member of the atlanta reef club for a while, now I am setting up a 125 here in good ole knox, moved here back in September....

My wife and I love the area, and I am looking to meet fellow reefers to swap frags with in the future...Let me know if yall are going to have the meeting
