Skimmer pump replacememt

Well I called bigals and they said the pump on my skimmer is broke because of the sand in my tank and then they told me to remove my sand or this will happen again and they won't be able to cover that one. Should I really be getting that much sand in my sump?

I have never had this happen. I do not have sand in my skimmer compartment in my sump. I think you are being fed a line of crap.

Well in order to get a new pump I would have to ship the whole skimmer to them... which I already cut off the stock cup and made my own... I would have to pay for it to be shipped there and back which would be $20-$30 total. I have no idea why they need the whole skimmer so im just order a pump and using the needle wheel impeller I have now instead of the stock impeller. Plus she told me to remove my sand so I better get on that. ;)

Sounds to me like they're just trying to get out of a replacement. I have sand in my tank and I have never found sand in my sump.

if it is too small too see, then it's not sand, it's dust. that would not clog a pump so bad to cause it to break. are they essentially saying that their skimmers won't work in a tank that has a sandbed, because if so then they need to get out of this industry. The majority of tanks have some sort of sand bed. How would sand be in the water column anyway? Is you powerhead pointed right at it?

What they are saying is the equivilent of telling someone with a faulty door that if they want a replacement they better make sure the wind doesn't ever hit the door, because even an imperceptible breeze will cause it to break open...a poor excuse for poor craftsmanship.

Honestly, Andrew. I think that they knew that they had a kid on the phone and found you to be an easy target. I take it you told them about your sand storm in your tank and it was the perfect excuse to get out of warranting their product.

Sad, but I think it is true. Maybe try having your dad call. They give women the run around all the time. Been there, done that. Luckly when I go to get my car fixed, I know enough about a car (being an automotive engineer) to call their bluff.

Nope, didn't even tell her about the sand storms or other pumps failing. Nothing... she just asked after like 5 minutes of talking about why it broke what I had for my subtrate.

Andrew,
skimmers are made for saltwater and most saltwater tanks have sand or crushed coral. It's more likely it's in the tech. dept 's SOP to ask question until they can put blame on the purchaser.

She was willing to replace it but kept on telling me it's my fault because I have sand in my tank. Then when she told me to ship the whole skimmer back and I would have to pay to have it shipped there and back I gave up. Its not my fault their pumps don't last.

Well time for some changes and major changes to my tanks. Should be a 2-3 day project and ill be taking pictures along the way. Not saying what I'm doing yet but I think I'll be much happier with the new look. :D

Andydrew remember when you were here and we talked about how often you mess with your tank. You need to learn to leave it alone and let it mature.

This is half my dad's idea. ;) I've got more reasons behind this all but no details until it's done. :D Plus I'm crazy and getting am looking into getting a Tunze and ASM skimmer from PA.
