Skimmer Question!

I'm currently in the works of setting up a 40 gallon breeder with a 33 gallon sump for a peacock mantis. Is a skimmer recommended for keeping a peacock in this setup? If so, would it need to be added right away, or could I add the skimmer down the road? Also any recommended skimmers for that size of setup?

Oh and one more question. Would a refugium for pods be benificial to my tank? I'd also like to use that space to house the snails/hermits for his meals

Thanks in advance

Mike

the pods may serve as a light CUC, but the mantis will not eat them. So no i don't think a fuge is needed unless you have fish in there that do eat the pods. not a bad idea to have a space to house hermits and snails though.

I believe a skimmer is an important piece of equipment on any tank that has something like a mantis (a messy eater). not vital, so you could easily add it on later, but something you should keep an eye out for. don't bother with a cheap skimmer, go with something decent. as for size, the bigger the better, depending on your own budget.

i run a skimmer on my mantis tanks as of right now, but it is not something that is absolutly needed. but it would be recomended for you to get one down the line. a nice skimmer choice that is pretty cheap would be the coralife needle wheel skimmer. i have 1 and love it, i think i paid $125 new for it.

a refugium is a good choice as well. i personally think that refugiums are better then wet/dry's myself. but the mantis will not eat the pods. are you plaining on housing corals with your mantis too?

I might put a few corals in down the road, but I think I'll let my mantis build his permanent home first before I think about putting any corals in

Thanks for the advice guys!
