skimmer question

I've recently finished setting up a new tank its a 56gal tank with a 40 gal sump.The water, substrate are in and the sump has about 10+ lbs of rubble rock in it . Now,my question is how long does it usually take before the skimmer actually works. All I get now is bubble overflow even on the skimmers lowest setting....
anyone...anyone at all....

Is the skimmer new? If so it can take the skimmer up to week before it breaks in and starts to produce good skimate.

yes the skimmer is new but do I leave it on and let it overflow into the sump for a week until it starts to kick in...

If that's not a problem (not a lot of splashing), that can help break it in. I'd definitely leave it running, but if you can figure out how to keep it from overflowing that may help (cut back air intake or water flow rate).
