im looking at getting a skimmer from a friend just to last untill i start my new tank with a sump. im looking at a hang on skimmer that has a crack on the tube. im just wondering if i just put some silicone on the outside of the tube so it didnt leak anyone would that be ok or could it cause the skimmer to not work right or cause some kind of harm to the tank?

If its acrylic you would want to use weld-on, not silicone.
Weld-on 4 if its a crack that is still connected with no gaps.
Weld-on 16 if its chipped or separated.
You would need to order it or get it at a local plastics shop. Box stores do not carry what you need.
