Skimmer sanity??

How about trying to get a used one from a reefer somewhere? I got my octopus nw200 for really cheap. It was basically brand new too. There was nothing wrong with it.

You have been given some excellent suggestion my vote goes to either the Euro-Reef or the Aqua C series. Both are going to give you great results and both fall close to your price range. The one thing I can say about a skimmer is that it is one of the few pieces of equipment that you shouldn't skimp on. Granted $400 is not skimping but if a RC135 is what you want and it's $100 more then I would spring for the $100 it is well worth the cost! Oh and if it wasn't answered the needle wheel is the impeller that moves the water through the pump. It is called that because it looks like a wheel with a lot of needles on it. It breaks up the air and mixes it with the water to make the skimmer work.

I dunno, the Octopus seem to do best with mods ... and the new ones look modded at the importer. That doesn't sound what you're asking for [no mods, no alterations to get it to work right]

I dunno, but if you want `set and forget' and proven quality ... IMO not the way to go. [I have a Octo NW150 FWIW ... decent build, but too much messing just to get it working at full capacity].

Personally, if you want long-term reliable - the Tunze isn't a bad suggestion, nor would be a H+S or other reliable brand.

Personally, I've never been too fond of ER skimmers. Pretty good , but pricey for what they are IMO.

Take a look at what re-sales for a good price. IMO, those skimmers are worth their purchase price. The rest can be bought used ... and from a trustworthy source I've had great luck buying used equipment. Check here [and check their past sales/search!] as well as a local reef club.

I think they all probably work, they just have different "features" or adjustments.

I use a real basic venturi type skimmer and pump on a 125 that I picked up for only $40.00

The pump attaches to the skimmer and sits in the bottom of the sump and pulls the water in. There are two adjustments. One that creates the back pressure for the water to set the water hieight in the skimmer tube and another to adjust the air inlet.

It takes about 5 seconds for me to adjust and about 3O seconds to empty and clean the collection cup.

No one ever mentions the MRC skimmers...a local reefer suggested MRC to me to purchase. He has used them in the past and has really liked them. Never on any of the forums that I have asked about skimmers has an MRC been mentioned...any reason why?

I get from your question that you'd like something that you don't need to mess with.

MRC [and other beckett] skimmers are great, powerful skimmers. In my experience with mine, though - getting it tweaked initially was some playing around and for user-simplicity it wasn't the best.

Also, as they need pressure-rated pumps to function well, they are at the high end of skimmer electrical usage.

Great skimmers, but not always what I'd suggest in the new-to-the-hobby.

it's been alluded to but not said straight out. I'd advise you to get a skimmer that's rated for a tank larger than your 75G. That way, you can stock a little heavier than otherwise, or if/when you upgrade to a bigger tank, you won't have to incur the cost of another skimmer.

We've all experienced the feeling of trying to get the right skimmer. Decided, based on research on RC, to go with the DAS recirculating skimmer to replace my ASM skimmer. Good price and seems to work well. Based upon my experience, my rankings of skimmers I've owned

Aqua C Remora < ASM G1x (unmodified) < Seaclone < ASM G1x (modified)

I'm feeling confident the DAS is finally going to make me happy.
