I am in the process of setting up a 210 Gallon LPS/Softy tank w/ a high bio load and my local LFS has recommended the Super Reef 6000 external which is rated up to 500 Gallon tanks. Is there any drawbacks, other than the price, to running such a large skimmer on my system.

IMO, that protein skimmer will not be too much for your system at all. Most of the time i don't go by what the mfg rate their protein skimmer. I always get the protein skimmer that capable to handle system that is twice or 3x's bigger except this time i went 10x's bigger than my total system....

i agree picture of my skimmer on a 300 gallon tank rated for 1600 gallon tank and it great less water change even with heavy heavy feeding with just 2 pump running.it will save me money overtime less salt and worries
