Skimmer upgrade for 60gal SPS reef

I am considering upgrading my current skimmer (ASM G3 w sicce 2500)
to something a bit nicer. I really want a cone.
60 bare bottom SPS reef (mainly Acros) med fish bioload/ heavy feeding.:o
No nutrient problems currently , just want something nice

I have been told by some of these maybe too much and wont skim right.
(myth or fact?)

here is what I am considering:
bubble magus Bm189 CS-p
Super reef octopus XP 2000 cone
Super reef octopus 2000INT
ATI bubble master 200

any thoughts?

yeah man those skinmmesr are over kill. I would run an xp1000 on your tank and no bigger. I have that skimmer on my 55 works so great pulls out very nice stuff. Also the pump is dead silent.

It's Not overkill. I used a Super reef octopus XP 2000 cone
on my 29G SPS tank. It had a 29 gal sump, so about 50 Gal's Total.
And it skimmed Great. Pics up on the Xp2000 Thread.

karassboom and reef junkie... yeah I am looking for overkill (SPS.... it's what you do),
I was just asking THE EXPERTS if it would skim correctly, but thanks anyway for your input.

Wolfgang, how is the quality on the xp2000? I saw a post in the coralvue form where a brand new one broke and the CS rep said "get some JB weld and...." that kinda put me off, was the build quality a concern with your xp2000?

now its between the ATI bubble master or the xp2000 cone.!!

i would save $100 and go with the reef octopus extreme xs160. I have it on my 120 mixed with 10 fish and it does an outstanding job!! xp200-rated for 180-so 20 gal difference.....xs160 has a smaller footprint also. A refugium would add more to your system than the extra 20 gal skimmer rating. I bought it(xs160) about a month or so ago. Best move ive made! Its capacity is still more than double your total water volume!!! Just my options,i know you said you wanted to hear from the "experts". Im no expert on sps or reefing for that matter but i am on saving (unless you have that money to burn,if so ill send my address and you can mail it to me) and i know how to save a buck and not spend it foolishly!!! Just think you'll still have overkill but now with an extra $100 to spend on a frag!!!
Ive done a lot of reading on various thing and you can over-skim! Youll take out every nutrient in that water and have to dose more than your dosing now.
Reef Octopus's are very well made and i think with every brand of skimmer you will find isolated incidents of someones brand new skimmer having a malfunction of some sort.

I guess I should have put this up in SPS only keepers, you 1 year members aren't really giving me any valuable info at all.
you are going off what the manufactures say their rated to, also for a refugium to really benefit my system it would have to be as big as my current sump.
why are you cluttering up my thread if you know nothing about SPS/ reefkeeping?

I stated the models Im looking at.... I wanted to know how other EXPERIENCED SPS keepers felt about putting that large of skimmer on my small system, MY 9 YEARS of experience with SPS tells me to go for it

I don't need a lecture on how to spend my monies

thanks

Well.. I just upgraded my AquaC 120V to a Bubble King 160 Mini (gen2)... I run 60g... I would recommend u drop more ¢a$h! LOL

No problems wth mine at all. When I first set it up. I had some overflowing issues, but they were all solved. They even sent me a new Pump. Skims great. I have pics up of 29SPS, as well as Skimmate pics on threads.
I can post them up later after work, if you want to see them., or search my Posts.

sorry for lacking the proper knowledge to post on your thread lol :-) i did not mean to get your panties in a bunch! Have a great day and good luck with what ever route you take! Id go all out if money was not an issue!!! New tank and all!!!

You definitely need to do more reading. Many reefers start on both ends, either crappy stuff or overkill, in the long term neither will work properly or at least without issues. For a 60gal, even if its bb, any of those skimmers are too much.
You need to find a balance between, equipement, fish (feeding habits) and type of corals.
Just my 2 cents

Well i have sps in my tank and i have been in the hobby since 03 but never joined the forum. I have a 55 gal and the xp1000 works great i just cant see going any bigger and still keeping it skimming. The BK mini is a beast and far better then the reef octpopus line of skimmers and if you got the cash to spend on that i would forget the xp1000...lol

+1

I totally agree! I've tried running two overkill skimmers on two different aquariums with all sorts of corals, and it doesn't work. You'll have issues either way. Go with a skimmer rated for your system water volume.

Here's my XP2000 on a 50Gal total System, 29Gal Tank, 29 G sump works just Fine! So My advice is go BIGGER on a Skimmer!!!! If you go "Smaller" you will wish you bought a bigger one the first time around!
Set up a friends 92 G corner bow with a ETSS 600 Skimmer, and no matter what he always had algae problems Switched to a ETSS 800 and in a week all his problems were solved! He Has a awesome tank now. The ETSS 800 Skimmer is rated for WAY more than his 92 gal. I feel most people use a WAY to small of a Skimmer.
In My Opinion of course

I think you will get mixed bag of opinions here that are entirely subjective depending on multiple variables that go into running a successful system. That is great for wet skim and I run the same skimmer but much dryer on the skim mate. I made the purchase for my 60 total volume system as I like to run a 2-3 time system volume skimmer. Right now the xp2000 cone is on my 90 gal sysem and it is an absolute beast. Something to consider will be how many nutrients your going to have to add to the system to make up for the indiscriminate removal this skimmer will be able to produce. You are going to be pulling out tons of stuff both good and bad. All that being said I would get the cone 2000xp and run it very dry so more good stuff stays in the tank. Theres definately more than one way to run a tank and both skimmer rated for you system will work and over rated skimmers will work as well you just need to adjust your other habits. To the OP and wolfgang I say go for the big skimmers; do it!

Plus, newer skimmers are so much closer to their specifications. At least reef oc and aquamaxx to name a few. But what do I know? I've only had a dozen or so skimmers. No sps though, but since when did the skimmer become capable of knowing sps were in the tank? Lol jerk dirty water is dirty water. The skimmer can't skim if it can't keep a constant head of foam on it. DUH!

I believe the person tried to snap in the silencer instead of sliding it in the bracket as per the instructions. Really can't blame Coralvue if you don't read first.

Im doing the xp 2000 cone, Ive always been a believer of craming the biggest skimmer you can in/on an sps only system.

reefcrest waters (wild SPS environment) are very nutrient poor and have high redox... so why not get a skimmer that helps get a closed system closer to recreating that??????

anyone who replied saying its overkill and wonty work ....might want be the ones who need to do more reading.
