Skimmer upgrade on a 120g...

I currently have a Precision Marine PM-150 that seems to be very inconsistent in performance. Not sure if it's operator error or what... Anyway, I'm thinking to upgrade to a better quality skimmer.

I believe that Reef Octopus is one of the top recommended brands, but at this point I'm completely open to suggestions and/or recommendations. Right now I'm eyeballing a couple of Reef Octopus skimmers and not sure which I should focus in on, or if I should avoid one or both of these.

Reef Octopus 6" NWB-150
Dimensions: 12" x 8-1/2" x 22-1/8" high
Powered by 1 OTP 2000 pump at 500 gph
Recommended sump water level: 6"-7-3/4"
Rated aquariums up to 150 gallons

or

Reef Octopus 4" DNWB-110
Dimensions: 10-1/2" x 8" x 23" high
Powered by 1 OTP 1000 pump at 250 gph
Requires a 250 gph feed pump or plumbed from an overflow to inject water into skimmer
Rated for aquariums up to 125 gallons

I am not completely happy with the skimmer that I have so I dont feel comfortable recommending it yet. I'm still adjusting it trying to get consistant skimming.

However, i think both of the skimmers you listed are underrated, especially the 4". I had a super reef octopus 1000 int and it was a little under powered for my tank.

I have heard great things about the aquamaxx cone 3, no experience but havent really heard anything bad about them.

I have almost the exact same set up as you as you can see in my signature. I have had reef octo skimmers and they are pretty good. The few issues I had with them made me want to branch out for the new one on my new 120g. I ended up getting the aquamaxx coneS co-2. It has the new bubble plate design. Its rated for 350 gallons at a 6in diameter. I think its because unlike most skimmers in the range it has the pump outside the skimmer chamber. THIS THING ROCKS!!!! I did a quick vinegar bath and it was producing instantly. In fact, it produced some skim from the tap water and vinegar I ran it in in the bath tub. I love this skimmer. If you can wait a few weeks for one, I would highly recommend it. The price is great, the pump is very solid and easy to find parts for, and it is totally quiet. Just my 2 cents.

Old school perhaps but I run a Bubble King Mini 180 for my 120 and I love it. I have owned alot of skimmers including the SRO2000 but this one I am sticking with.

And if there's one thing about this hobby I can't stand, it's skimmers. Annoying, fussy, difficult, temperamental, noisy beasts that have driven me crazy in the decade plus I've been at this...

I'm going to put a Vertex Omega 150 on my new 120 gallon build. I've seen one running and it is impressive.
