Skimmer upgrade

I am in need of a skimmer upgrade and looking for your input and suggestions. I currently have a 125 gallon reef and am a little embarrassed to say that I currently use a Top Fathom 100 in my sump. I have been having problems as of late with its efficiency and need to make a change. I definitely do not want to break the bank but I understand that an investment needs to happen. Thanks and I look forward to your input.

cant go wrong with a super reef octopus xp 2000. Check on the selling forum for a used one at a good price or on bulk reef for a new one.

ATB skimmers for me, on the high side but the last skimmer you will buy and very easy to sell if you upgrade.

I have a Reef Octopus skimmer that was used on my 150 gallon system before I upgraded. I believe it is the Extreme 200. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I have a SRO XP-1000SSS for my 75, and it's a great skimmer. But it's probably a bit too small for a 125. An XP-2000 or XP-2000SSS, depending on the space you have in your sump would work well.

Or, if you do want to break the bank, I'd go with an ATB Elegance 200 Pro.

Do your self a big favor and look at the Bubble Magus skimmers (same price as an reef octo with way better performance in my opinion). Trust me I have owned several models of both skimmers :)

I am also using the Top Fathom 100 on a 55 gallon reef tank. My skimmer is working but is only pulling lighter colored material out once every 2 or 3 days. It worked better when I used a larger pump years ago.

I am curious if you upgraded on how much better performance you may be seeing with the new skimmer technology?

I have my tank in the bedroom now and minimizing tank noise is important. Does anyone have a suggestion for a quite recirculation skimmer since my sump is only about 5-6 inches deep?

I have a older tank setup for 10 years and I am trying to now pull down the nitrate levels that have been hovering at 20 ppm for years using the Vodka treatment approach.

If you are dosing vodka you need a good skimmer or you will have problems. All the above skimmers are good Reef Octopus, Bubble Magus, if you want high end then ATB, Bubble King, or their Vertex Alpha Cone are all top notch, and probably the last skimmer you will ever need.

Upgrading my skimmer to a ASM G2 for my 150gal tank.

I have a question regarding how to implement the new skimmer, Do I run both until the new skimmer is broken in or remove the old skimmer and just leave the new one to work ?

Also, forgot to mention, i won't be back in town till sunday evening. Leaving to go to the lake in 4 hours, weeeeeee!! But send me a pm if your interested and I can reply as soon as I can
