Have had a asm g3 for about 3yrs now and am looking to upgrade. .. was looking at the reef octopus pov dc1....I have a 110 mixed reef. .. thoughts? Other suggestions. .
I am replacing my SWC 120 with a Vertex Omega 150. I am very happy with the SWC but am upsizing my tanks so I need to upsize the skimmer too. I hope that I will be equally happy with the Vertex as I have been with the SWC. All that I have read has said I will be happy with the Vertex. While searching for my skimmer the BM Curve skimmers were praised heavily just like the Vertex is. I did look at those POV's too and they look nice but not many users yet to get input on them.
To be honest you probably would be happy with all of them as long as the POV is also as reliable as the others have already proven to be. So get the one that tickles your fancy the most.
There will be some "Black Friday" deals coming up so keep a look out for those if you're thinking of going new.
I'd consider these:
JNS SK3 or AquaMaxx Cone 3 -- same pump as the AquaMaxx EM300 but the pump is external and a conical shape (debatable on increased efficiency, if any, from the shape) so depends on how much room you have. If you can fit a skimmer with an external pump, I'd go that route.
Reef Octo DC1 (or DC2 if you can stretch the budget a bit more) -- I really like the pumps because they're dead silent. I think JPorter is running the DC1 right now so you could ask him for a first-hand review.
Skimz 162 (or the 161 if you want an internal pump, again I recommend going with an external pump).
I currently have an ATB 840v2 that I picked up last "Black Friday" from Reef Specialty (vendor here) at a killer deal and would highly recommend it for your size tank but ATB either went out of business completely or they ended their US operations (I'm not sure), so there's a risk in warranty work. Knock on wood, I haven't had a single issue yet.
