Skimmer Upgrade?

Alright so I been using my Aqua C Remora that I bought for my 55g when I had it, on my 120g/40g sump/fuge, is the Reef Octopus HB 300 Dual Hang on Back Protein Skimmer a decent upgrade? I can get one for 50$.

The ONLY reason I am going for HOB is because there is not much room at all to put a protein skimmer IN the sump. Not without removing it or moving the display lol. I've not found a small enough in sump skimmer.

Can't you get one that sits beside the sump and plum it into the sump...I think it would be better than a hang on the back one....

There is no room on the sides... The way the thing was hard plumbed from the original owner, there's only like 3 inches of space on either end of the sump.

With skimmers (like tanks) you can often find yourself chasing your tail as newer and better ones are always coming out.

Most (but not all) manufacturers tend to over-rate their skimmer capacity. I have found this to be more likely in the entry-level models. Therefore many use 1/2 of the manufacturer's rating as a guide to their true capacity in a reef. Obviously bioloads can influence this. In the case of the HB 300, my guess is you will be pushing its limits. However, it is likely better than what you have. I am a fan of buying the best skimmer your pocketbook will allow. If you foresee being able to save up another $100 or so in the next couple months, I would take Sean's "discoreefrover" advice and try to get a used ER model that will be much truer to its rating.
