skimmer vs. carbon reactor

I run carbon but passively (bag in sump in one of the baffle sections to get good flow). I knead every couple days and change monthly. In the Zeovit community, if running in a reactor, they run half the amount than passively. I run 1 cup on the 120 of a good carbon (FAOIS has good bulk stuff). The ROX stuff I had negative effects as it is pretty aggressive, so if used, "dial it down".BUT, I have always run carbon for as long as I can remember!

Not sure what you're asking, they both do different things. And do you mean carbon as in GAC?

I guess I was just trying to figure out how to use some sort of mechanical filtration with the least amount of noise. I have a silent tank, but when I added the skimmer I got a loud (to me) hum and hiss. Since this post I have dialed the skimmer in and it has broken in a bit and the humming has died down some. I also added towels to the interior of the stand to absorb the humming.

So far so good. Tank is very quiet.

I wouldn't sacrifice the benefits of a skimmer because of noise. If it still bothers you after the towels and tuning, you might want to try another skimmer to reduce your noise issues.

I always hear my two massive overflows, no matter how much I tune. Everyone else likes the water noise but it tends to annoy me haha.

Its great now. I hear no trickle from the over flow because it was modified with duro syphon and emergency drain. My skimmer needed some adjusting and the pumps needed some moving around to not vibrate on the glass. The towels absorb a lot of the left over vibration and humming noise, so as of right now my tank is very close to dead silent!
