Skimmer

Hi, Is it better to have as big a skimmer as you can get or is there such a thing as overskimming a system?

Thinking about the Bubbleking 300 skimmer any thoughts?

Thanks

the word overskimming is almost double edged.

what are the inhabitants of the tank?

if it is a fowlr then no way to over skim.

reef.. that may be where you can run into trouble, as some are filter feeders.

a little more info would help alot.

Sump around 50G. running phos reactor and wondering about optimal skimmer. 6 times turnover / hr to sump. 20x circulation/ hour with Tunze pumps x2.

You are correct in saying overskimming is double edged. As far as overskimming--there has been tests done now on skimmates and they have found that phosphates and nitrates are removed but in far less proportion to a group of organics that are not particularily good for corals.

Although it is not usually an issue in predominatley lps coral tanks it certainly is an issue with sps corals.

Reefers of this viewpoint therefore say you can't overskim

Of other concerns to you might be with a huge skimmer is how to control the microbubbles from entering your tank , the flow required through the sump, how much heat is produced by the pumps and the height of the level of water needed in the sump

i know some people who have sps dominate tanks and dont skim at all. so you can over skim with sps. however, by using the skimmer part time you would be ok.

In other words, the bigger the skimmer the more volume for the sump and bigger return pump etc.....

Do the self cleaning skimmer heads available on some skimmers work well?

Thanks
