Skimmers

OK.. so give me your thoughts on this one. which type of skimmer should I expect better performance out of. a needle wheel type or one similar to the remora's that are more of a gravity type. given that both are high quality units and move the same ammt of water thru them.

Insump, hang on or external and what specific skimmers are you thinking about? Do you want recirc or normal?

Nice thing about NW is they can be infinately modified and can be made to draw a tremendous amount of air. Def. go with a recirculating, though, and you'll polish that water.

OK.. so more specifics. I won the little Remora nano at the club meeting at AC. I am using it on my 75 as the other skimmer I had was a Jebo and really didnt do much good at all. it works better than the old one and I am getting a nice dark funk out of it, but I fear that it is really not doing what my tank needs it to. so the reason I am asking this is that I am thinking about selling the remora and going with one of the Coralife skimmers they have at AC, or getting something else of a different design. I have a very tough situation in that I only have 24" of height under my tank to mount the skimmer in the sump. adding one beside the tank is not an option as little hands could easily get to it.

really the goal of the question was to get the pro's and cons of the different types of designs. I like the way the Coralife looked as it was working at AC. Lots of turbulent froth in the chamber compared to the remora.

I have never used a Corallife but from what I have seen of them they look ok but not great by any means. If I were you I would shoot for a good (Euroreef or possibly ASM) 20" skimmer that has at least a 6" diameter tube. I know the little Euroreef I have that size will fit in a 20L. Look around and you can probably find one used for ~ $200 - $300.

Chris, hence the other issue I have. not that big of a budget. really I can only spend what I get from my other skimmer which is close to around $150 or less..

Well I guess the Corallife is your best bet unless you can find one of the smallest Euroreefs they used to make which is a CS180 I think....20" and a 5" tube.
I know it probably doesn't mean much but IMO by saving for a while and getting a better skimmer you will save more money in the long run. I bought 3 and spent several hundred $ before I settled on the one I have. IMO if you "settle" for a smaller or inferior skimmer you will just end up buying a new one at a later date. Also FWIW it's fairly easy to get a regular remora used for $100 so I would think you would have a hard time selling that one for more than that....I could be wrong though as I don't know the nano crowd too well. Sorrry if I am being a party pooper but just trying to give my honest opinion FWIW:)

Party Pooper.

yea, I am not sure what I will get out oor if but new they are $150. it is onloy 1 month old and barely broken in. we shall see.

the worst part is having the short stand for me. I am not dead set on the coralife one. but from what I have gathered from you, the larger diameter chamber the better.
