Skin Disease

Dr fosters and smith also carries Formalin. Only 5 bucks + shipping.

I can't find Formalin on their site...?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Didn't show up at first. However, I see no mention of international shipping so I might be out of luck!

Ok, I found some Formalin! I found 10% neutral buffered Formalin. Seeing as Orchid #1 is dead already (as described above), Orchid #2 is currently halfway through a 45 minute bath and looking ok so far. Orchid #3 is nervously waiting his turn!

Since 37% Formalin is usually used for fishy purposes, it is suggested to use 1 mL per 1 gallon of tank water for a 45 minute dip. This has worked well for me in the past. So I figure, 10% Formalin I need to use 3.7 times the amount of Formalin (37/10=3.7). So that is really close to 1 mL per liter, so that's what I went with. I am using 0.5 mL in 500 mL of tank water.

Fingers crossed...

Now, I'm not totally sure it is Brookynella. It may be a close relative? I'm not sure. However, I do know that broad spectrum antibiotics didn't do a thing when used orally (most effective) for a week, so my next step is Formalin. It's been 6 or 8 years since I've used it (it's nasty stuff!), so I take the use very seriously. It is a last ditch effort to save the fish.

I will update tomorrow.

I never did update this post with my results...

The two remaining Orchids were given a bath as described above each day for two days. In one Orchid the disease was more progressed than the other, and that fish passed on. The other Orchid recovered very well. I imagine I would have been able to save them all if I had been able to treat with Formalin earlier.

Maybe; formalin should always be on hand, its also the only decent treatment for brooklynella. You're dealing with a nasty disease that seems to be showing up more often, or at least being recognized. Its very contagious among certain groups of fish, like chromis & dottybacks.

I'm not sure if it was Brook or not. It wasn't classic Brook that's for sure.
